About COP 11


India to be hosting the Convention of Biological Diversity COP11


In the event of the United Nations decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) 2011-2020,  India will be hosting an international convention which would be a potential benchmark for
sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
The Eleventh conference of the parties (COP 11) to the convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held in Hyderabad during the 1st to 19th October  2012. Hyderabad International Convention center, HICC-HITEX complex is the conference venue.


The CBD was first conceived at the Rio Earth Summit , Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The present convention is organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.   Delegates of about 194 countries and representatives of the World Bank and other international bodies will be attending the COP 11.
COP11 is significant as it is being held after the Nagoya Protocol .


“ Nature protects if she is protected - is the motto, the convention is coming up with” said Mr. Braulio Ferreia de Souza, CBD Executive Secretary . In her welcome message, Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, minister of Environment and Forests said, India is looking forward to host the COP11 and in a honest  gesture, said India will live up to its obligations and global responsibilities In a fair, equitable and just paradigm.


The protocol aims at conservation of biological diversity, sustainable development and optimistic exploration of genetic resources.
The main objective of this convention would be to discuss,draft an action plan to execute the protocols. Governments will work on mobilizing and resource pooling to implement the strategies at every level in their respective nations.
